Generative AI and Art

There has been lot of hype regarding generative AI replacing jobs and even artists. And people showed examples from Adobe Firefly AI etc. So I did a project to try to re-create some of my paintings using Firefly AI. See the results below and judge for yourselves. (My opinion at the end)

Painting Trial 1:

Text input to the tool: “a sunflower blooming from a plant that has grown out of the drain hole of a toppled pot”

Painting Trial 2:

My opinion:
The first two AI trials were way off considering the idea that I wanted to convey using my paintings. The third one came closer, even though as a painter, I didn’t like the aesthetics of the results. What I observed is that, when the visuals imagined and asked for by the creator is not already there (or seen by the AI model), the AI tool (Firefly AI) fails at “creating” them, as we saw in the first two cases. But, the objects in the third trial was commonly seen objects, which were just required to be assembled into a scene, the AI tool performs better. I feel that generative AI can assist graphic designers who just want to assemble already existing objects into a scene. But, if you are a creator, who imagines unseen visuals and want to create a painting out of it, AI tools fail miserably. Though, I’m not ruling out the possibilities of future generations of generative AI.

Tell me your thoughts…

You might be thinking, why I didn’t try to recreate some famous artworks, like the way it is normally seen. The reason is that, I wanted to really test the AI model, with unseen data 🙂
